Do kids really learn better without high-tech gadgetry?

There are no computers in the classroom at Waldorf schools, where it's believed that kids learn better through physical activity and creative, tactile tasks. Funny enough, many Silicon Alley bigwigs seem to agree
This may be the era of wired classrooms, but not everyone is convinced computers help kids learn. Many Silicon Valley parents, who work for top tech companies such as Google and Apple, are sending their children to pricey Waldord schools where classrooms are devoid of technology, The New York Times reported recently. The century-old Waldorf philosophy advocates learning through physical activity and creativity. Students might acquire problem-solving skills through knitting, or learn fractions by dividing up a cake. Do kids really learn better without high-tech gadgetry?
This philosophy is good for kids and parents: These schools "are on to something," says Amy Windsor atBabble. When I think back to my tech-free childhood, I can't help but idealize it and think that it'd be good for my kids to have the same imagination-stirring, gadget-free experience, at least until their teen years. And if parents put down their gadgets some, too, this philosophy could be "a boon to the whole family."
"Are Waldorf Schools the antidote for tech-saturated families?"
And there's some science to it: An increasing stack of scientific studies shows that "computers inhibit learning rather than help," says Amy Graff at the San Francisco Chronicle. Researchers have found that educational software doesn't help children retain information or learn to read any better than old school methods. Some scientists have even found that too much computer time is bad for kids' brains, so it might be best to hold off on the gadgets until after elementary school.
"Tech execs send kids to anti-computer school"

But technology isn't all bad: "To a degree I agree, and I think there's a real danger in letting our children rely too much on technology and not get out and learn in the dirt of the real world," says Julie Ryan Evans at The Stir. But you don't want kids to fall behind their peers in this tech-centric world. Besides, I've also witnessed how much fun my kids have, and how much they learn, with educational apps and games.
"Waldorf schools show learning with less technology may be better for students"

The RIM's Blackberry playbook computer tablet

CES 2011: Mieliśmy w ręku bardzo lekki i poręczny - BlackBerry Playbook

Research in Motion (RIM) is the company is award-winning BlackBerry® product line. The BlackBerry family includes best-in-class smart phones and software offerings, as well as the BlackBerry Playbook, the world’s first professional-grade tablet.
Research in Motion said it is delaying the launch of an upgraded operating system for its struggling Playbook computer tablet until February 2012, yet another setback for a tarnished company struggling to compete with Apple.
David Smith, RIM's senior vice president, said in a post on the company's blog late, that the new version of the operating system isn't up to its standards at this point.
Smith also said the new version also won't have the popular messaging service BlackBerry Messenger when it's introduced in February.
The BlackBerry-maker had announced earlier this fall the updated operating system would be available in October with features that include the ability for BlackBerry users to automatically access their email, contacts and calendar on the Playbook, a function it doesn't currently have. When RIM launched the Playbook in April it said would add the features within 60 days, but later pushed that back to the summer and then to October
The Playbook received negative reviews because it didn't have those features.
"As much as we'd love to have it in your hands today, we've made the difficult decision to wait to launch BlackBerry Playbook OS 2.0 until we are confident we have fully met the expectations of our developers, enterprise customers and end-users," Smith wrote on the Inside BlackBerry Blog.
Shares of RIM fell nearly 6 percent on Wednesday to $21.02 in early afternoon trading on the Nasdaq.
The Playbook is RIM's first effort to branch out from its Smartphone base and capture a portion of the tablet computer market, but it has been a major disappointment. RIM said about 200,000 of them sold last quarter - far short of what analysts had expected. And that number paled in comparison to the top-selling iPad, of which Apple shipped 11.1 million units during its most recent quarter.
"They should stop pushing things out before they are ready. They don't have that many swings at the plate left," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.
Gillis said RIM has consistently over-promised and under- delivered. He said they have management problems.
"You don't get right up to the final hour, and say, 'You know what it's going to be a few more months,'" he said.
The Canadian company has had series of recent setbacks. A massive outage frustrated tens of millions of BlackBerry users earlier this month.
RIM has also delayed the launch of new phones with the company's new QNX operating system for several months. RIM disappointed many in October when they didn't announce a clear timeline for when they would release phones and tablets with the new software which is now called BBX. The update that RIM says it will provide for the tablet in February won't include the BBX software.
RIM continues to have success overseas but has increasingly lost market share in North America. Many U.S. users have moved on to phones with big touch screens like the iPhone and various competing models that run Google's Android software.

Intel was tried to expand beyond PCs into smart phones and tablets

Intel is an American multinational semiconductor chip maker corporation. It is the world's largest semiconductor chip maker, based on revenue. Intel makes motherboard chips, network interface controllers and integrated circuits, flash memory, graphic chips, embedded processors and other devices related to communications and computing. Intel combines advanced chip design capability with a leading-edge manufacturing capability. So Intel was primarily to engineers and technologists.
In the tar pit of a stalling personal computer market, Intel (INTC) is headed for a colossal clash as it scrambles after many failures to get its chips into the fast growing smart phone and tablet markets. On one front, the storied Santa Clara giant must take on a host of competitors who dominate the mobile device business, just as it claims to finally be getting its brainy microprocessors into those gadgets as well as a laptop-tablet hybrid dubbed the ultra book.
On a second front, it must fight off those same competitors, who are now taking dead aim at Intel's 80 percent share of the PC chip market because of Microsoft's recent decision to let their chips run on Windows, the PC software formerly designed solely for Intel chips.
It will likely take a couple of years for Intel to develop sufficiently advanced chips to aggressively push into mobile gadgets and for its competitors to make chips suitable for PCs, said Shane Rau, at market research firm IDC. But then, he added, the industry could be in for a war.
"2013, 2014 is going to be a pivotal period for this mutual invasion of each others' spaces,".
As the world's top chipmaker and Silicon Valley's third-biggest company, Intel has survived challenges to its business before. In the 1980s, when Japanese companies took control of the memory chip market, it switched from making memory chips to microprocessors, the brains in personal computers. And despite speculation in the mid 1990s that embarrassing revelations about a bug in an Intel microprocessor might cause it to lose market share, Intel today dominates PC microprocessor sales and has recently posted a succession of record earnings.
Intel insists plenty of people -- particularly in China, India and Brazil -- remain eager to buy desktop and laptop computers. But while sales of smart phones and tablets are booming, industry research firms contend PC sales are slowing. And even Palo Alto-based Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), the world's biggest maker of personal computers, is considering spinning off that product line.
Although Intel has tried to expand beyond PCs into smart phones and tablets for years, it has had little luck, largely because its power-hungry chips greatly shorten the battery life of small gadgets.
Concluding that the chipmaker's efforts to get into the mobile device market have been marked by "failure, haplessness and cluelessness," a PC Magazine columnist recently declared "Intel is starting to look like a dinosaur."
The vast majority of chips used in smart phones and tablets are made by such companies as Apple (AAPL), Qualcomm and Samsung, using technology from British firm ARM. Meanwhile, the ARM camp is poised for the first time to enter the PC market because their chips will be able to run on PCs equipped with Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 8. Because of their unprecedented access to Windows, the ARM chipmakers' share of the PC microprocessor market could zoom from zero to 15 percent by 2015, IDC has estimated.
So far, Intel and ARM executives are being cautious about predicting the outcome of their competition. While declining to speculate on how much of the PC business its chip designs might grab, Simon Segar’s, who heads ARM's U.S. operations, downplayed Intel's push into smart phones and tablets.
"It would be foolish to believe that ARM would maintain a near 100 percent penetration rate for eternity" in those devices, he said. "But it's not the kind of thing we're fixated on," he added, noting that ARM-based chips are likely to remain competitive in part because they are constantly being upgraded. Stephen Smith, Intel's director of net book and tablet development, voiced similar confidence about his company's prospects for branching out of PCs. Noting that Intel is designing chips that will dramatically reduce their power consumption in smart phones and tablets, he said, "we're persistent and we're investing for success."
Some analysts remain skeptical of Intel. They say ARM's lead in small mobile devices -- particularly smart phones -- will be hard to overcome. Moreover, they complain that early versions of the Intel-powered ultra book -- which have been compared to Apple's Mac Book Air -- are overpriced at around $1,000 and lack some features offered by tablets.
But other industry observers say that by 2013 ultra books should sell for $600 or less, while also boasting touch screens, quicker speed, slimmer designs and security software that Intel is building into its chips as a result of its $7.7 billion purchase of McAfee last year. Among those impressed are analysts at investment bank FBR Capital Markets.
"In short," they advised their clients in a recent note, "we believe Intel will push ultra books to eventually become the mainstream notebook of choice for PC makers by 2016."
"This is very much a transition period for Intel," added David Kantar, an analyst with Real World Technologies, which tracks computer trends. While it remains to be seen how well the chip Goliath will fare, "it's just really exciting to watch the evolution of the industry, to see the mobile and the PC collide."

The Genius SP-HF2020 wooden speakers

Tired of flat-boring sound from a TV? Genius brings all serious listeners a new set of speakers, SP-HF2020, to experience magnificent sound. The Genius SP-HF2020 wooden speakers are tall and good-looking speakers, with exposed tweeters and woofers and a warm, solid sound. When it comes to volume and power, they can get shockingly loud without experiencing distortion, and their only true downfall is the dinky remote that’s included.
At a Glance
Good features: powerful, strong sound, good price
Bad feature: tiny remote
Specifications:
• RMS: 60 watts
• S/N Ratio: 85 dB
• Frequency response: 50Hz to 20kHz
• Inputs: Digital coax, two analog
• EQs: 3
It Looks as
The SP-HF2020 speakers are stylish in a retro sort of way. They eschew the commonly found rounded edges and curves for straightforward wooden rectangles. Although the pair pictured here has a brown wooden look, the pair I reviewed was painted completely black. They featured silver accents and small blue LED indicator lights on the bottom. As mentioned, there are no grilles on these, so these probably aren’t the best speakers for locations easily accessible by children. The SP-HF2020 speakers measure 16 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide by 5.5 inches diameter, so they’re wicked tall for computer desktop speakers. They would look attractive and would work well next to a TV for a home theater or gaming system.
Performance
I was quite pleased with the results of the SP-HF2020, especially considering the price point. The sound was warm at low volume levels and did not distort very much at the peak volumes. Of course, what you listen to will affect what you're hearing, so bass-heavy lovers are always more likely to hear that buzz and fuzz when they're blasting their speakers. I used what I always use to test speakers - the "Open Your Ears" Head-Fi and HDTracks album that was created to help test headphones. I also played some current favorite Jackie Greene songs.
But even when I cranked Jackie Greene's "I'm so gone" at peak volume, there was no distortion. Instead, there was room-shaking, wall-thundering sound. Sure, some of the highs were a bit muddled, but overall you're getting tremendous sound for a 2.0 system that's under the $150 price mark.
Remote
The only complaint I have with the Genius SP-HF2020 speakers is its paltry plastic remote that looks like it came out of a cereal box. Its obvious Genius was going for portable when it designed the thing -- the six-button remote measures less than 3.5 inches long by 1.5 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick. Frankly, it's just begging to get lost and really detracts from the speakers' otherwise cool design.
The Bottom Line
Dinky remote aside, you’re getting great sound for a $129 MSRP and a 2.0 system. Just make sure you have enough space for these speakers -- they may not be the best choice for a small desk. And don’t lose that remote!

Touch screen computers from HP

Touch screens accept input by allowing the user to place a fingertip directly on the computer screen, usually to make a selection from a menu of choices. Most touch screen computers use sensors in or near the computers screen to detect the touch of a finger. Touch screens are appropriate in environments where dirt or weather would render keyboards and pointing devices useless, and where a simple, intuitive interface is important. They are well suited for simple applications such as a automated teller machines or public information kiosks. Touch screens have become common in fast-food restaurants, department stores, drug stores and super markets, where they are used for all kinds of purposes, from creating personalized greeting cards to sell in glittery tickets. Car-rental agencies frequently provide touch screen systems at their counters so that customers quickly access and printout driving directions. Computerized touch screens also appear on slot machines in gambling casinos. Some computer makers refer to pen-based systems as touch screen systems because the user touches the screen with a pen. However, the term touch screen implies a system that accepts input by allowing the user to touch the screen with a fingertip.

A touch screen is new technology that allows the user to simply touch the screen instead of using a mouse or other input device. You simply have to lightly push on the screen with your fingers to move things around or to enable a program.
We have a one of the touch screen computers from HP called HP touch smart 320m series:

The smallest portable computers are personal digital assistants

Personal digital assistants are among the smallest of portable computers. Often, they are no larger than a small appointment book, but they are much less powerfull than notebook or desktop computers. PDAs are normally used for special applications, such as taking notes, displaying telephone numbers and addresses, and keeping track of dates or agendas. Many PDAs can be connected to larger computers to exchange data. Most PDAs come with an electronic pen that less the user write on a touch-sensitive screen. Even though they do not include real keyboards, some of these devices provide a graphical keyboard that appears on the screen; you type by tapping the desired keys with the units pen. Depending on themodel, PDAs may include following features:

Built  in microphone and speaker, enabling the user to record speech digitally.

2.       Personal information management software.
3.       Miniaturized versions of personal productivity applications.
Internet, fax, or e-mail software

The variants of keyboard used with computers

Home keyboard with iphone dock

Promini wireless keyboard with track pad

The keyboard is one of the most and first peripherals to be used with computers. If you have a desktop computer, there's a good chance you've been using the basic keyboard that came with it and may be need of an upgrade. A standard keyboard has 100 keys, each of which sends a different signal to the CPU. If you're a laptop or a notebook user, on the other hand, you may simply be sick of typing with your nose so close to your screen.
Whatever your reason for wanting a new keyboard, there are a few things you should consider before plunking down your money. First and foremost, decide what tasks you'll be primarily using the keyboard for. Of course, you may be a combination of some, or even all, of these types, so you should prioritize the features that are most important to you before you start searching.
Ergonomically correct keyboards:
Many variations have been made on the standard keyboard, primarly for the sake of comfort and the reduction of repetitive stress injuries. People who type a great deal is susceptible to arm and hand fatigue and strain. New, ergonomically correct keyboards can help reduce those problems.
These are designed to help the users hands stay positioned correctly, reducing bending and strain. An ergonomic keyboard maybe curved in some way, or it may be in to two separate sections so the user can place them most comfortably on the desktop.
Gamer
Gamers are a specific breed unto themselves, and they typically require or desire keyboard features that are wasted on the rest of us. Things like integrated LCDs, programmable keys, backlighting and changeable number pads can give PC gamers increased benefits and enhance the gaming experiences.
If you're a gamer, look for keyboards that are specially labeled as gaming keyboards. You can expect to pay a higher price for these features, but most serious gamers will tell you they're worth the cost.

what is the importance of Mouse is pointing to PCs

Today, all new PCs come with a pointing device as standard equipment. If the computer is a desktop or tower model, the pointing device is usually a mouse. A mouse is an input device that rolls around on a flat surface (usually on a desk or keyboard tray) and controls the pointer. The mouse first gained widespread recognition when it was packaged with the apple macintosh computer in 1984.
A trackball is like a mouse turned upside-down. It provides the functionality of a mouse-but takes less space on the desktop.
Many notebook computers provide a joystick-like pointing device built in to the keyboard. You control the pointer by moving the joystick. On IBM systems, this device is called as track point. Generally, it is called as an integrated pointing device.

Before buy a mouse:

Wired or Not?
Whether or not you should get a wireless mouse is really a personal preference. With a wireless mouse, you won't run the risk of getting tangled in your cord, but you do run the risk of running out of batteries at an inopportune time. Some wireless mice come with charging docks so you don't have worry about buying those AAA, although you do still need to remember to put the mouse in the dock or station. Other mice may come with an on/off switch to preserve power; as with the docking station, this is only useful if you remember to switch it off when you're done using it.
When it comes to those wireless receivers, some come with nano receivers that sit flush with the USB port. Others come with larger wireless receivers that jut out a few inches from the port. As you can guess, you typically pay a higher price for the nano receiver, but it might be your best buy if you're a frequent traveler.
With a wired mouse, you won't have to worry about batteries or receivers because it will draw power from your USB (or PS2) port. The downside of that, however, is that you're quite literally tethered to your computer. You can only move as far away as the cord is long.

Laser or Optical?
Mice operate by tracking in "dots per inch" (or dpi). An optical mouse can track between 400 and 800 dpi, while a laser mouse can generally track more than 2,000 dpi. Don't let the higher dpi numbers fool you, however. Your everyday mouser typically won't require such precise tracking and will get by just fine with an optical mouse. (Some even find the extra preciseness annoying.) Gamers and graphic designers, however, often welcome the additional sensitivity.
Ergonomics
Perhaps the most crucial aspect of any computer peripheral is its ease of use, and when it comes to mice, comfort is king. Ergonomics in mice are important because they can help prevent repetitive stress injuries. However, ergonomics is not a one-size-fits-all feature, and just because a manufacturer claims its device is ergonomic doesn't make it so. For more about ergonomics, and how to set up an ergonomic workstation , check out About's dedicated site .
Unfortunately, the only way to know whether a mouse is comfortable is to use it for an extended period of time, and most mice in the store are boxed up pretty tightly. As with all computer peripherals, research your device before purchasing it. If the mouse won't be used for extended periods of time, you can let aesthetics weigh more heavily in your decision if you'd like. Graphic designers, PC gamers and other long-term users, however, should stick with what's comfortable, not what's pretty.
Full sized or Travel-Sized
This category is exactly what it sounds like. Although there is no universal sizing among manufacturers, many mice come in two different sizes: full or travel. Even if you never plan to remove your mouse from its home, travel mice can often be more comfortable for people with smaller hands. Likewise, a road warrior may want to stick with a full-sized device because ill-fitting mice can cause discomfort

Concept of Network Computers

In some situations, a user does not need all the power and features provided by a personal computer. If you want to use only the internet, for example, or if your job involves data entry, then you may not need the processing power, memory, and storage capacity of a fully equipped PC. In this instance a network computer becomes useful. A computer is a less version of a personal computer, with minimal processing power, memory, and storage. Network computers are designed to be connected to a network, a computer intranet, or to the internet. The NC relies on the network for software and data storage and may even use the networks server to perform some processing tasks. In the mid-1990s, the concept of network computers became popular among some PC manufacturers, who pronounced the NC as the future of computing. However, no single NC standard emerged as various hardware and software makers fought to command this new market. As a result, several variations on the network computer quickly became available, and consumers almost immediately became confused about their differences and special purposes. While network computers have gained some market share in business, they have not succeeded to the extent their makers anticipated. In business variations of the network computers are thin clients, diskless workstations, windows terminals, and Net PCs. Some network computers are designed to be connected only to the internet or to an intranet. In home settings some network computers do not even include a monitor; instead, they connect to the user’s television, which serve as the output device.
Many large companies have adopted network computers foe their users because they have a lower total cost of ownership than standard personal computers. NCs are cheaper to purchase, operate, and maintain than normal PCs. Because most users systems are connected to a company network anyway, users can take advantages of the network server’s speed and storage capacity and can often access the internet through the company’s network connection.

Importance of Computer Literacy

Today, computers are no longer specialized only by scientists or engineers. Computer systems are everywhere-in places you cannot see or would not expect to find them. They are a fact of life, a common thread that ties together our education, work, and home life. With computers touching nearly every facet of our lives, the issue of computer literacy becomes important. But you know what computer literacy is, and why is it so crucial? Why should you spend time and energy studying books, and becoming “computer literate”?
Technically, to be “literate” in a subject means to have knowledge of that subject. You understand its basic terms and concepts. As an example, consider driving a car, if you have a driver’s license, then you are literate in driving-related terms and you understand the rules of the road. You were not born with such knowledge or abilities, but it may be hard to imagine living without them today.  Consider the fact that computers are an essential part of business today, whether you are an auto mechanic or a surgeon, a journalist or an airline pilot. Like the cars that take us to work each day, we rely on computers more with each passing year. If you do not use a computer regularly, chances are great that you will soon.

 Benefit of computer literacy:
Increased employability: if you have a basic computer knowledge along with specific job skills, employers will consider you more trainable in and adaptable to the computerized work environment.

Greater earnings potential: as you increase your computer skills, you become a more valuable worker, especially if you focus on high-tech skills such as programming, network administration, or hardware maintenance.

Greater access to resources: computers are incredible learning tools, especially when you have access to data on CD-ROMs or the internet. You can use a PC to access vast knowledgebase’s on almost any topic, search archives of information dating back decades, and even take online courses for credit.

Greater control of assets: Using the power of the internet and only a little knowledge of computers, you can manage your personal finances and indulge your interests in ways that were not possible just a few years ago. Online banking and investing give you control of every dollar you earn. Online shopping makes it easier than ever to spend your money, too.

Computer literacy and the skills you can build with that literacy are essential to success in this society, not just in our working lives, but in the way w learn, manage, our finances, and improve our standard of living.

Here some few important factors to speed up your computer

However a slow computer can be optimized if you ensure few of the important factors that usually affect the speed and performance of your computer.
Clear temporary data from your computer:
clear all the temporary data from your computer in a regular interval. Temporary data occupy unnecessary hard drive space and consume system resources. If there are lots of temporary files and folders in your computer it can create a slow computer problem.

Run a regular virus remover tools:
Computer virus and other many malware harm your computer severely. A virus can harm your computer to any extent. Viruses are of different types and they can create many issues including slow computer problem in your system. Run an updated and latest virus definition program to remove all viruses from your computer.

Run Windows basic utilities:
Windows has many great tools and in built tweaks within it. Some of the great utilities are disk cleanup, disk defrag tool, and Windows file checker utility. We recommend running all these at least once in a fortnight. They certainly help to computer to a maximum extent.

Remove unwanted programs:
Programs that are not required and do not serve any purpose should be removed from the computer. Just like the temporary stuff they also occupy the hard drive space and consume unnecessary system resources. For a complete PC repair all the unwanted programs should be uninstalled.

Clear you’re desktop:
your desktop should be clean all the time as this is a working area for your RAM. If there are many programs placed they keep on engaging the memory and CPU. Cleaning the desktop certain saves many system resources and you will experience the better performance.

Ensure minimum hard drive space:
for a speedy and great working computer at least 20% of your hard drive space should be empty always. If there is less than 20% spaces in your hard drive it will affect the overall system performance and your data access speed as well.

Verify the Windows registry is not corrupt:
Windows registry is the most sensitive and important database in all Windows systems. All the changes in your computer get recorded in the registry. Over time this registry may get corrupted due to various operations (such as installing and uninstalling many programs). If the registry is corrupt it affects the whole system of your computer and you will experience the slow computer issue.
We do not recommend editing the registry manually rather you may run a good and reliable registry cleaner program to clean and fix all registry related issues.

The main features of modern help desk software

Computer and software vendors realized the need to build and maintain help desk centers powered by help desk software in the early 1980s when personal computers started to play an important role in day-to-day business activities and home computers became part of everyday life. In the course of the past two decades, help desk systems evolved from relatively simple software for managing databases containing data on various issues to complex systems that integrate different software modules designed to support complex functionality. In fact, modern help desk systems are able to process simultaneous requests by hundreds and even, thousands customers while keeping track on numerous issues, providing instant solutions, and processing and recording "tickets" related to these issues.
Generally, help desk systems' core module is an issue tracking systems that receives, records, and handles various requests by computer or software users. Of course, such a system can service any other industry but help desk applications emerged originally within the IT industry where customer support employees have to deal with numerous and often complicated issues on a daily basis.
A modern help desk system is able to record phone calls on issues and log customer requests to a database, where solutions to most common problems are entered thus enabling customer support staff to offer instant solutions. Issue tracking functionality allows customer support departments not only to identify a particular customer but to take a brief look at past issues the customer has experienced and solutions that worked best for this particular customer. In addition, advanced help desk software platforms are able to escalate automatically an issue to Level 2 or Level 3 customer support representatives, in case no appropriate solution can be offered by Level 1 customer support.
